みっち、ウイリアム・ブレイクの『無垢の予兆』Auguries of Innocenceを読むの巻。とても愉しいのです

先日さるお方のブログを訪問した際に、標題の詩を拝見したのである。そして、とても気になったのだ。訳書を探したが、どうも良い本がない。それで、自分で訳してしまうことにした。英語原文は、WikipediaのAuguries of Innocenceから拾っている。オリジナルにはないが、参照の便のために、行番号を付加してある。（今回は全132行の内、84行目までを訳出しています）

WikipediaのAuguries of Innocenceが不完全であった（2行抜けがあった）ことと、そのパラグラフ区切りが全く信用ならないことが判明したので、改訂版をリリースします。2行の抜けを補い、パラグラフ区切りは、みっちが自分で判断しています。

1: To see a world in a grain of sand
2: And a heaven in a wild flower,
3: Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
4: And eternity in an hour.
一粒の砂に世界を見て、
一輪の野の花に天国を見るには、
手のひらに無限を握り、
ひとときの間に永劫を掴むことだ

5: A robin redbreast in a cage
6: Puts all heaven in a rage.
7: A dove-house fill'd with doves and pigeons
8: Shudders hell thro' all its regions.
かごに押し込まれた1羽のコマドリは、
天国中に怒りを振りまき、
小鳩と大鳩で満ちた鳩小屋は、
地獄全体を震わせる

犬が自分の主人の門前で飢えるなら、

悪意を持って語られた真実は、
思いつく限りの嘘を打ち負かす
これはまさしくその通り、
人には喜びと苦悩がお似合い

赤子は産着以上のもの、
この人間世界すべてにおいて

赤子は女性たちに明るく捕まえられ、
それ自身の喜びを返す

71: The bleat, the bark, bellow, and roar,
72: Are waves that beat on heaven's shore.
73: The babe that weeps the rod beneath
74: Writes revenge in realms of death.
赤子の泣き声、吠え声、どなり声、わめき声
すべて天国の海岸に打ち寄せる波だ
鞭打たれて泣く赤子は、
死の王国で復讐を刻む

75: The beggar's rags, fluttering in air,
76: Does to rags the heavens tear.
77: The soldier, arm'd with sword and gun,
78: Palsied strikes the summer's sun.
風にはためく乞食のボロは、
天国をボロに引き裂く
剣と銃で武装した兵隊は、
夏の太陽をも麻痺させる

79: The poor man's farthing is worth more
80: Than all the gold on Afric's shore.
81: One mite wrung from the lab'rer's hands
82: Shall buy and sell the miser's lands;
貧乏人が差し出す硬貨は、
アフリカ海岸中の全ての金に勝る
労働者の手で絞り出された僅かな金は、
守銭奴の土地を売り買いできる

83: Or, if protected from on high,
84: Does that whole nation sell and buy.
いや、尊き高みに庇護されれば、
国家全体をも売り買いできるのだ

はい、ちょっと長いので、ここで一旦切りましょう。残りは次回にアップすることにします。
以下は今回分を訳出するにあたっての、自分用のメモです。
1-4行：ここは特に有名な箇所。3-4行を命令形で訳したが、1-2行と3-4行を同格で並列させて訳すのも、ありと思う。（その方が多数派かも知れない）
5-6行：かごの中で自由を奪われた鳥に仮託して、人間の人間に対する暴力を語っている。以下同様の描写が続く。
9-10行：主人の門前で飢える犬とは、報われない愛国の士などを想起させます。
19-20行：地獄に落ちた人間はもう肉体は滅びているので、魂しかない。魂を呼び覚ますというのは、最後の審判を彷彿させる
23-24行：子羊の屠殺は許される、殺して食べて良い、ということでしょう。宗教の戒律が書いてあるみたいだ。
29-32行：小さなミソサザイは、女性の象徴。女性をいじめる男は、男に愛されず、男（雄牛）を煽る男は、女に愛されない、ということであろう。
35-36行：bowerは「居心地のいい私室」といった意味なのだが、繭cocoonと解した。
42行：polar barは解釈が分かれるところ。みっちは、polarを、「極限」→「高み」→「至高のもの」、barを「目標となるレベル、壁」と解している。barを法廷とするのもありそう。要は「こういう稼業をしていると、ろくな死に方はしないよ」的な意味合いである。
45-48行：ブレイクはブヨ、蛇、イモリに毒があると言っているのでなく、人間の悪徳をこうした生き物の毒に例えている。
51-52行：王子の豪華なローブも乞食のボロも同一視している。あるいは、守銭奴の目から見れば、どちらも大差なし、とも取れる。
64-65行：この2行がWikipediaでは抜けておりました。（汗）
74行：死の王国とは、もちろん地獄のこと。虐待されて殺された赤子は、地獄で復讐を誓うのである。（怖）
75-76行：ちょっと意味が取りにくいが、ボロを着て冬の寒さに震える乞食を見殺しにすれば、天国もボロとなる、というあたりか。

写真は、ウィキペディアの『ウイリアム・ブレイク』の項から。有名な『Tyger! Tyger!』の、作者自身による彩飾版画です。みっちが、ブレイクのことを知ったのは、中学生の時に、アルフレッド・ベスターの傑作SF『虎よ、虎よ！』を読んだから。もうかれこれ、半世紀ほど前です。（汗）
